Radiant Space is pleased to present All gods are hot, a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Carter.

Creating an immersive tableau of paintings on translucent drafting film, Carter suspends paintings from above to activate their double-sided nature and to confront viewers with figures that float and dance through the space. The figures in Carter’s paintings highlight the performative nature of her subjects along a narrative of fairy tale, folklore, and agriculture. Puddles of colored ink and swaths of oil paint layered with photographic image transfers present an uncontained body, overflowing and interacting with the animal world. Elements of dance, costume, and mask meet feathers, tails, tentacles, and hooves, invoking the hybrids of ancient mythologies and emphasizing intense moments of transformation.

Also on display will be a selection of the artist’s ongoing series using cranberry as a medium, alluding to her upbringing on a cranberry farm in Massachusetts. The tart, highly pigmented fruit acts as a symbol of personal identity, and of tension with familial patriarchy. Using the concentrate and sediment from cranberry skin, Carter paints onto antique linen handkerchiefs, exploiting the staining effect of the pigment while signalling the abject in an intimate history with the body.
